After a tumultuous couple of years without Johnny Depp, the movie only known thus far as Pirates of the Carribbean 6 is definitely going to come out and Margot Robbie is in talks to star in it.

This announcement came after a period in which the movie's future was called into question after Disney blocked Johnny Depp from returning as Captain Jack Sparrow in the wake of Amber Heard's abuse allegations, but it seems the production is ready to continue without him.

That said, there does appear to be some chance that he could reprise the role as fans and co-stars have wished given his apparent return to high-profile movie roles in general.

But whether this turns out to occur or not, it looks like the decade-spanning blockbuster franchise could see a new face in the form of Margot Robbie.

Much like almost everything else surrounding the film, however, it seems her inclusion remains up in the air as well.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that production of Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is soldiering on no matter what.

And as he told the newspaper, the film is still at an early enough point of development after its first announcement two years ago that there remain multiple candidates for the project's final script.

Both the film's title and its final cast remain unknown, but Bruckheimer has shared some possibilities.

For one, he said that he and other producers are looking to have Margot Robbie in a major role.

In his words, "We are developing two Pirates scripts -- one with her, one without."

Considering that The Hollywood Reporter quoted Robbie as hinting that she could join the franchise as far back as 2020, it's unclear exactly how these talks have progressed if her role still remains a possibility rather than a lock.

Bruckheimer also mentioned that even Depp's exile from the Pirates movies isn't exactly a certainty.

When asked if Captain Jack Sparrow was in either of the scripts Bruckheimer mentioned, he replied, "not at this point," but also said "the future is yet to be decided."

That said, this would take some Herculean negotiations on Disney's part since Depp has gone on record as saying that even if Disney offered him the role back, he's at a point where he would turn it down.

With that in mind, it doesn't seem likely that either Depp or his character will appear in Pirates 6 at all.

It also remains unclear who any of our pirate protagonists will cross swords with in this upcoming movie.

Considering that the post-credits scene from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales saw Orlando Bloom's Will Turner have a nightmare about Davy Jones, there appears to be some suggestion that he wasn't as easy to kill as our heroes thought.

So if we don't get an all-new villain, this seems like the most likely candidate.

Although we've definitely seen that this movie remains full of possibilities and unknowns, there is one thing we can be pretty sure of.

According to Collider, Kaya Scodelario confirmed that her contract has her signed on to the sixth movie in the franchise, which makes her character Carina Barbossa the most likely to return.

That being the case, there's no reason not to expect that her lover Henry Turner — as played by Brenton Thwaites — will also make his return.

When it comes to everything else including when this movie will actually come out, it seems we will simply have to wait and see.
