People Refused To Let A Guy Sell A Family Heirloom To Pay For Mom's Cancer

Amy Pilkington 3 Nov 2019

These days, it's not uncommon to hear about people drowning in medical debt. There are community fundraisers, GoFundMe campaigns, and all sorts of other things sick people shouldn't have to be putting their energy into while trying to heal.

It's an awful thing to have to deal with, and for one desperate Redditor by the humorous name MrElonMusk420, it was forcing him to begin making hard choices.

His mother had been diagnosed with cancer and started chemo a few months back. Her savings had already been drained.

Wanting to help her afford her next round of medication, MrElonMusk420 looked for things he could sell and ended up posting an heirloom to the r/knife_swap community on Reddit.

"[WTS] Vintage Leatherman. Welcome to Elon Musks 'my mom is sick and needs money for medicine sale'." his post was titled.

In the listing, he says that the Leatherman tool had belonged to his late grandfather and though it likely wasn't used, the man never left home without it.

He also explained that he'd seen listings for similar models in worse condition going for $60 and he was hoping to get $75 for his.

"Given the nature of the circumstance I’m obviously trying to get top dollar and be fair to this wonderful community."

Though the post only mentioned the circumstances once, without further context, the community wasn't going to let him make the sacrifice.

Almost immediately, people began asking for MrElonMusk420's PayPal address while also refusing to actually buy the knife.

Once they learned that it was the only thing he had of his grandfather's, they doubled-down on the fact that he had to keep it.

It's unclear how much was actually raised in the end, but in one comment the next day, MrElonMusk420 said that they were at $250.

According to him, the medicine costs $400+ per month.

Throughout it all, MrElonMusk420 continued to worry about people thinking that he was looking for handouts.

After about 24 hours, he said that he was no longer comfortable accepting donations and he took his PayPal down. He also said that as soon as he graduated and found a job, he would pay back every cent.

"Wish you guys could have heard my mom’s excitement over the phone when I told her what was going on. She was crying and wanted me to personally thank everybody involved."

"Everyone who has- you guys are miracle workers, everyone who’s sent prayers- you too are miracle workers. You’ve made a grown man cry outside a college campus for about an hour now lol. [...]

"I’m genuinely floored and grateful by each and every one of you for the donations, the kind words, the prayers and everything. My mom will be at least a bit less stressed knowing she has some money for next months prescriptions."
