Jason Momoa Shaved Off His Flowing Locks, But It Was For A Good Cause

There are certain things you think you can count on in life: that margaritas will be the best way to get brain freeze (sorry, daquiri lovers); that the Scooby-Doo gang will always catch and unmask that villain (even if Velma does all the work); and that Jason Momoa will always sport flowing locks that just hint at a degree of wildness and untamable-ness.

And now, well, I guess two out of three ain't bad?

That's right, Jason Momoa shocked fans — and himself, a bit — with a dramatic new look after shaving off his signature locks.

That hair has always been a part of the 43-year-old's on-screen presence — whether it's as Khal Drogo or Aquaman or Dune's Duncan Idaho, the flow has been there.

So you know that he'd never just slash off his hair without a pretty good reason.

It's not like he's experimenting with bangs or something, right? We're talking about a surfing, motorcycle-riding, guitar-shredding movie star getting a sudden and extreme buzz cut.

Are you ready for this?

It's gone, folks. Here's hoping Jason's hair wasn't a Samson-like key to his success, because it's all the way off his head now. It's just like any ol' barber sweepings, headed to fill a motel pillow or possibly a knock-off Build-A-Bear.

If the new look is a shock to you, it's just as odd for him.

Momoa posted the end of his hair-chopping session on his Instagram and in the video, he can't help running his hands over his newly short hair, saying "Aww man, I've never even felt the wind right there."

In the video, Momoa explained that it was all for a good cause.

Momoa, who was named as a United Nations Environment Program Advocate for Life Below Water in June, said in the post that it was all about cutting down on plastics.

"Here's to new beginnings let's spread the aloha," he wrote in the caption.

"[Be] better at protecting our land and oceans," he continued. "[We] need to cut single use plastics out of our lives and out of our seas. [Plastic] bottles, plastic bags ,packaging, utensils all of it."

"I'm tired of using plastic bottles, we gotta stop," Momoa added in the video.

"Plastic forks, all that [expletive] goes into our land, goes into our ocean. I'm here in Hawaii right now, and just seeing things in our ocean, it's just so sad. Please, anything you can do to eliminate single-use plastics in your lives. Help me, plastic bottles are ridiculous."

Reducing and eliminating single-use plastics has long been a passion project for Momoa.

Even before his UNEP gig, Momoa had started up his own bottled water company, Mananalu, which uses aluminum bottles rather than plastic.

In August, Momoa made waves when he personally handed out bottles of his water on a flight from Los Angeles to Hawaii. Not a bad way to draw attention — but not possibly not as likely to capture headlines as shaving off all that signature hair.
