Plastic surgery is a popular, and relatively commonplace, way for people to alter the way that they look. It's especially prevalent in the world of showbiz, as it's an industry that values looks.

Actor Zac Efron has been the subject of rumors that he had plastic surgery on his jaw for more than a year now. He recently set the story straight in an interview with Men's Health.

The rumors popped up because Efron had been looking different.

Last April, in an Earth Day PSA, Efron discussed environmental issues. What was most noteworthy for many viewers was the fact that he appeared to look different — most notably in the jaw area.

He acknowledged that his appearance has changed.

In a wide-ranging interview with Men's Health magazine, Efron said that his jaw had indeed changed. This came as the result of an accident at home in 2013 where, while running with socks on in his house, he slipped hit a granite countertop and broke his jaw.

The injury had ripple effects.

Efron explained that the injury forced him to see a physical therapist so he could move his jaw normally again. He said that the facial muscles that normally operate in concert with each other were thrown into chaos.

The healing process didn't go as planned.

"The masseters (jaw muscles) just grew. They just got really, really big," Efron said.

At this point, he'd already appeared in the Earth Day PSA and his mom told him about the rumors that had been spreading online.

Normally, he tries to filter out the noise.

While he does have social media accounts, Efron said, "If I valued what other people thought of me to the extent that they may think I do, I definitely wouldn't be able to do this work."

He opened up about other body stuff as well.

Efron attracted attention for his ripped physique in Baywatch, but described the look as unattainable.

"Like, it's fake; it looks CGI'd. And that required Lasix, powerful diuretics to achieve," he said. "So I don't need to do that. I much prefer to have an extra, you know, 2 to 3 percent body fat."

It sounds like it's taken a physical toll on him.

He admitted that the diuretics and constant training were just too much, even if he was thrilled to land the Baywatch role. He says he fell into a deep depression because the experience burned him out.

He's now taking a new approach to physical fitness.

At the beginning of the pandemic, Efron says, he decided to take a long break from any kind of training to let his body recover. He's now doing lower-impact exercises with foam rollers, stretching and yoga.

He's addressed all the questions.

So, to summarize: no, Zac Efron didn't get plastic surgery, but he's had lingering impacts from an unfortunate jaw injury. And even though he's gotten ripped in the past, he wouldn't encourage it for anyone else.
