It's hard to believe that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has passed away. After a life of service and a legacy extending far past the monarchy, the Queen was someone millions of people found comfort and consistency in.

Now, in the hours following HM's death, fans are wondering about who was by her side at the time of her death, and why notable Royals like the Duchess of Cambridge weren't present.

On Thursday, September 8th, it was announced that HM Queen Elizabeth II died at 96.

The news came after an earlier statement indicated that the monarch was being monitored closely by doctors who were "concerned" for her wellbeing.

The Royal Family's Twitter released the official statement.

"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon," they announced Thursday afternoon. "The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

It was reported that the Queen's children and grandchildren were rushing to be by her side as her condition worsened.

However, there were a few people missing, notably the Queen's granddaughter-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton.

As reported by "People" magazine, this was most likely because she and Prince William's children —Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4 — had their first day of school this week.

"Hands-on mom Kate likely stayed behind at Adelaide Cottage for the children's first day of classes," the publication claims.

Thankfully, Kate would have been able to spend quality time with Her Majesty a few weeks back when she and Prince William visited the 96-year-old monarch at her Scottish estate, Balmoral, with their kids.

Of course, Balmoral is where HM died on Thursday.

Thank you for your service, Queen Elizabeth.
