Where there's a movie or show, there's a legion of dedicated fans who spend their time overanalyzing every frame and coming up with theories. Some are wild and unlikely, while others actually make a lot of sense.
And as many theories as there are out in the world, very few of them get confirmed by the creators or actors involved.
If you're like TikTok user Raven Stone, you might just be lucky enough to have your theory confirmed by the actress yourself.
Stone primarily posts TikToks where he overanalyzes movies (particularly from the 2000s), coming up with interesting and convincing theories about them. His TikTok for How to Lose Lose a Guy in 10 Days is no different, but calls attention to Kate Hudson's hair.
In the film, Andie is a gossip columnist who writes a series of "how-to" articles, and decides to branch out by writing a piece called "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days," featuring her own experience trying to get Benjamin Berry (played by Matthew McConaughey) to dump her.
Which is where Stone's theory comes into play. "I couldn’t help but notice that Andie’s hair is straight for most of the movie. Straight, every single time we see her researching her article," he says.
Any time Andie is writing or researching (including when she's being the overly emotional, needy girlfriend), her hair is styled straight.
But, as Stone notes, Andie in the movie wants to do more than her fluff pieces: "She wants to write about stuff that matters, like politics and current affairs."
He continues, "Sure enough, every single time her hair is curly, she is vulnerable, her walls are down, she is real. She’s not Andie Anderson, ‘how to’ girl. She is Andie Anderson, writer."
Hair style, clothing choices, and different colors are common visual elements moviemakers use to give audiences little details about a character's personality, growth, and motivations throughout their stories.
After all, Kate Hudson herself posted a duet with the original TikTok, nodding along and putting her finger to her nose to indicate that Stone's theory was, in fact, correct.
Whether you noticed it 19 years ago, or you just saw it now, the changes in Andie's hairstyles were intentional, and add a whole new dimension to the movie.
