American Girl's 2020 'Girl Of The Year' Is A Doll With Hearing Loss

Over the years, American Girl has become a lot more inclusive. The company started with three Caucasian dolls, now boasting 16 diverse characters with their own unique stories and histories.

The company recently revealed their 2020 Girl of the Year on Good Morning America, and she represents a major step for inclusivity in the world of play.

Joss Kendrick is a surfer and competitive cheerleader from Southern California.

She also has hearing loss.

Her story reveals that she was born deaf in her left ear, although she can hear a little bit in her right ear with the help of a hearing aid.

Her character shows that no matter what obstacles stand in your way to try new things, you can persevere in the face of stereotypes.

American Girl sought help in making sure they represented Joss as realistically as possible.

They worked with surfing experts, competitive cheerleaders, individuals with hearing loss, and stories of those with hearing impairments.

What's amazing is that they're also donating $25,000 to the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA).

Joss' collection comes with an array of fun surfer and cheerleader outfits and accessories to choose from.

You can find the whole collection right now on American Girl's website.

Their diversity and inclusivity has spread beyond their dolls, too.

Just this past fall they debuted a four-year-old girl with Down Syndrome, Ivy Kimble, in their October catalog.

It's so great to see American Girl setting the standard high for inclusivity and diversity in play for children.

Children connect with toys that look like them, making them feel empowered and seen in the world.
