Tom Hanks' Reaction To Ricky Gervais' Monologue At 'The Golden Globes' Goes Viral

Tom Hanks is Hollywood's favorite guy (and he's ours too). Why? He's the all-around good guy that people love, delivers amazing performances, and is known for being kind and humble with his peers and friends.

And in the year of 2020, he is coming through by being a meme.

Ricky Gervais, not for the first time, is the host of the Golden Globes.

Needless to say, his opening monologue made a lot of people laugh, groan, and squirm uncomfortably.

But Tom Hanks had the best reaction of all.

We already knew something good was coming for us for the opening monologue, considering the fact that Gervais was already candid on the red carpet.

He basically said how he just wanted it all to be over.

This man truly doesn't care about Hollywood's feelings at all.

Before we get into what Tom Hanks was making that reaction to, let us look at some of the best comments during his opening monologue.

“I came here in a limo tonight, and the license plate was made by Felicity Huffman.”

Yikes.

Oh, but that's not all that he said about her. He continued by saying:

"It's her daughter I feel sorry for," Gervais continued. "That must be the most embarrassing thing that's ever happened to her -- and her dad [actor William H. Macy] was in 'Wild Hogs.'"

Oh. My. God.

Then, he went ahead and called out the fact that the Globes weren't doing an In Memoriam. But gave an interesting theory as to why he thinks so:

“We were going to do an In Memoriam this year but when I saw the list of people who’d died, it wasn’t diverse enough.”

On Leo DiCaprio dating younger women, the host called him out in a hilarious way:

“Leonardo DiCaprio attended the premiere, and by the end, his date was too old for him.” he said, earning some nervous laughter.

Gervais also targeted Scorsese, who was constantly in the news for his Marvel comments.

"He said they're not real cinema and they remind him of theme parks. I agree. Although I don't know what he's doing hanging around theme parks, he's not big enough to go on the rides, is he?"

He made a number of comments about the movie 'The Irishman.'

The movie is very long, and Gervais felt it necessary to constantly poke fun at that very fact.

Thankfully, Scorsese was having a good laugh the entire time.

He also called out some major Hollywood scandals involving sexual assault.

Netflix

"Look, talking of all you perverts, it was a big year, Surviving R. Kelly, Leaving Neverland, Two Popes. Shut up, shut up — I don’t care, I don’t care!" he said.

Right after that, he called out the racism in Hollywood.

"Many talented people of color were snubbed in major categories. Unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do about that. The Hollywood Foreign Press are all very, very racist."

Oh, he spilled some tea.

He also wanted to call out the fact that celebrities sometimes pretend to care, when they often don't.

“If ISIS started a streaming service, you’d call your agent.” he said, reminding the celebs that they need to pay more attention to the world.

The entire time, the audience kept squirming in their seats, and it was hard to tell who thought he was funny and who thought it was too much.

Twitter seems to be divided on whether or not he's saying too much or not enough.

Tom Hanks is one of those people, it seems.

To be completely fair, Ricky Gervais did warn people right at the beginning that he would be saying things that would be pretty controversial!

"You’ll be pleased to know this is the last time I’m hosting these awards, so I don’t care anymore. I’m joking — I never did."

So, what was Tom Hanks making this iconic face to?

Basically, Ricky Gervais' entire opening monologue had to do with the two faces of Hollywood.

At this particular point, he was calling out one thing in particular.

He was warning celebrities not to make self-righteous speeches, because people at home just don't care.

He advised them all to just thank their gods and then go home.

Which is a bold and brave thing to say at the start of a show.

But then again, it isn't a Hollywood party without at least one person making people uncomfortable.

So he's doing a good job at that.

Plus, it's Ricky Gervais, people. What else did you expect him to do?

Plus, what matters most is the fact that his face (or in this case, his name) have turned into the first meme of 2020.

Which, really, is what viral moments are all about.

Hopefully, this meme lasts the entire year (wouldn't that be something).

Tom Hanks also went viral for his amazing speech when he won the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

He got very emotional during the entire speech.

“Thank you, HFPA; thank you all here,” he said. “Thank you for all your inspiration and all of your work and all the struggle that you guys go through in order to hit the marks and tell the truth. I have checked the gate; the gate is good.”

He was given the award by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

When an actor or actress is given this award, it is because they have contributed a lot to the film community.

It is always given to someone who will have a lasting impact on film and the acting world.

During his emotional speech, he blamed his tears on the fact that he has a cold.

"A man is blessed with a family sitting down front like that -- a wife who is fantastic in every way, who has taught me what love is," he said.

He was making the audience get teary too as he continued to thank his family.

"Five kids who are braver and stronger and wiser than their old man is. And, uh, a loving group of people who have put [up] with me being away months and months and months at a time."

Since his speech aired, some touching stories have flooded the internet about him.

Like the time Tom Hanks took a photo of himself when a fan left their phone unattended!

That is peak Tom Hanks, if you ask me.

All in all, no matter how you might feel about the Golden Globes, or award shows in general, we can all agree on one thing.

Tom Hanks is a treasure and must be protected at all costs.
