17-Year-Old Greta Thunberg Nominated For Nobel Peace Prize For Second Time

At just 17, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has already been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Twice.

In 2019, Thunberg was up for the Nobel Peace Prize, and many considered her the favorite to take home the award.

However, the Nobel committee saw fit to bestow that honor on Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who brought considerable reforms to his nation, including ending a 20-year military standoff with neighboring Eritrea, releasing thousands of political prisoners, lifting bans on many political organizations, and prosecuting former officials accused of torture.

With those credentials, he was very much deserving of the prize.

Nevertheless, 2019 was a big year for Thunberg.

Although she didn't win the Nobel Peace Prize, Thunberg was one of four who won the Right Livelihood Award, commonly referred to as the "Alternative Nobel," as well as being named Time magazine's "Person of the Year."

Thunberg was also to be awarded the Nordic Council's environmental prize, worth 350,000 Danish kroner (about $52,000 U.S.), but she declined the award, saying "the climate movement does not need any more prizes."

Now, in 2020, two Swedish lawmakers have put Thunberg up for the Nobel Peace Prize once again.

Providing their reasoning for nominating the teen activist, Jens Holm and Hakan Svennling said Thunberg "has worked hard to make politicians open their eyes to the climate crisis" and "action for reducing our emissions and complying with the Paris Agreement is therefore also an act of making peace," the Independent reported.

If she's able to win this year, Thunberg would become just the 18th woman ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

She would join the likes of Malala Yousafzai, Nadia Murad, Mother Theresa, and American anti-land mine activist Jody Williams.

Thunberg has not yet commented on the nomination. Winners of the Nobel Prizes are traditionally announced in the fall.
