Add A Pop Of Color To Your Garden With By Growing Rainbow Corn

One of the things I love about summer is having BBQs in the backyard with burgers, sausages, and corn on the cob. I was never a corn lover until we started doing more frequent BBQs. Now I'm obsessed with it. Ha, ha!

So when I heard about this unique rainbow-colored corn I couldn't resist and embarked on a quest to find out more about it. Here it goes.

Rainbow corn, also known as Glass Gem corn, is a special type of corn that comes in shiny purple, pink, blue, red, and yellow kernels that look like polished beads.

I've never seen corn quite like this before. At first glance, I thought this was just some plastic fake corn but no it's actually real. Whoa!

Apparently, this corn was first grown by Carl Barnes, an Oklahoma farmer.

He's been planting ancient varieties of corn as a means of connecting to his Cherokee heritage.

Since then more corn varieties have been mixed and grown in order to create rainbow colors with a glossy, polished sheen.

Now you can even buy the seeds yourself and grow them in your own backyard garden.

And they're perfect for making popcorn, too. I like the sounds of that.

Each one of these plants usually grows to about six feet tall, but they can reach up to nine feet.

Their ears are usually three to eight inches long.

You can plant this corn in late spring when the soil warms up.

And make sure you get a sunny spot and give it an inch of water per week.

In about 120 days you can harvest the corn, and once you peel back the husks you'll discover exactly what it looks like.
