The Oscars Revealed Why They Didn't Include Luke Perry and Cameron Boyce In Their 'In Memoriam' Segment

There are a lot of reasons to be disappointed in the Oscars every year, but usually those reasons are more along the lines of feeling like your favorite actor or movie deserved to win and didn't.

This year, the biggest controversy surrounded the 'In Memoriam' segment.

The 'In Memoriam' segment of the show was a touching tribute to stars we've lost this past year.

Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas performed a beautiful rendition of The Beatles' "Yesterday" as the images of those in the film industry that we lost this year scrolled overhead.

However, people noticed that two particular losses this past year were not included in the segment.

There was no mention of 20-year-old movie star Cameron Boyce, who died in July of 2019, or of longtime star Luke Perry, who passed away at 52 in March.

People took to Twitter to express their disappointment.

Perry's final role was a spot in Best Picture nominee Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, so many felt that his exclusion was particularly egregious.

Others felt that there were many celebrities who were left out that should've been included.

This included Sid Haig, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 80 after many years as a horror icon, appearing in films like House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects, and 3 from Hell.

Actor and comedian David Spade took to Twitter to express a similar opinion.

Spade worked with Cameron Boyce on the comedy films Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2.

The Academy has now made a statement on why the exclusion happened.

“The Academy receives hundreds of requests to include loved ones and industry colleagues in the Oscars ‘In Memoriam’ segment,” the statement read.

"An executive committee representing every branch considers the list and makes selections for the telecast based on limited available time."

They then pointed out that every submission is included on the Oscars website.

Fans were not satisfied with this answer.

Some of these fans felt that other celebrities were included who could have been replaced with Boyce or Perry, but unfortunately it is tough to quantify how important a celebrity or public figure is.

Others have posited that the way the In Memoriam segment is run can be disrespectful in many other ways.

Do you think this is a justifiable reason to leave Perry and Boyce out, or do you think it was too big of an oversight? Let us know in the comments!
