Sable Rescued From Fur Factory Lives As A Pampered House Pet

Is it just me or is it kind of sad that most people have heard of a sable fur coat, but probably couldn't describe the animal that fur it's farmed from? If they even realized that a sable is an animal.

But they are and they are adorable.

Zhenya was surprised when she saw a photo of a sable online and fell in love with the creatures.

And once she realized that not only is sable fur some of the most prized by the fur industry, but that demand was rising in her home country of Russia, she wanted to do something.

When she learned that the very animal she'd seen in the photo was destined to die for fashion, she decided to buy her instead.

The sable, which she called Umora, was bred in captivity and couldn't survive in the wild.

It's not all a happy ending, though. Umora led a tough life at the farm, which made her unpredictable and difficult to live with.

Only time and a lot of patience allowed Umora to settle down and be the clever, playful cutie that she is.

Zhenya told Bored Panda that she wouldn't recommend a sable as a pet.

They are wild animals and it can be months, if not years, before they aren't kind of a nightmare to live with.

But she hopes that people see Umora and recognize the animals behind the fur are alive and cute and worth saving.
