Restaurant Staff 'Stunned' After Servers Get $1,000 Tip Ahead Of COVID-19 Closure

Servers at a restaurant in Kingston, Massachusetts, were recently stunned to find that one of their tables had left them a $1,000 tip ahead of the location's upcoming coronavirus closure.

Mass. Governor Charlie Baker recently announced that as of March 17, restaurants will only be offering takeout or delivery to its customers.

This measure, which is in an effort to limit the spread of the coronavirus, has left the wait staff at Soltice restaurant feeling quite uncertain.

“One day at a time,” owner John Cataldi told WBZ-TV of the restaurant, which will also be lowering its usually higher-end prices. “We’ll just see what happens.”

Just hours after the announcement was made, two servers got the surprise of their life while collecting the bill from a table of four.

"One customer just decided to go over the top and tip them out a huge amount knowing they were going to be out of work for at least three weeks,” Cataldi explained.

For their $350 bill, the unbelievably generous patron had left their waiters $1,000 — a nearly 300% tip!

Cataldi said the gesture "was stunning [and] humbling."

“That people go out of their way sometimes to take care of people," he added.

Now that Soltice, and other restaurants like it, have closed their dining rooms and only allowed takeout or delivery, Cataldi said he hopes this story of generosity in the face of uncertainty inspires others.
