Woman Discovers The 'Soap' She's Been Washing Her Hands With Is Actually Cheese

Caitlyn Clancey 20 Mar 2020

I can admit I have eaten more than my fair share of deceptively edible-looking soaps.

I've nibbled a chocolate-smelling soap, I've spat out a raspberry-scented soap, and I've accidentally eaten half a caramel soap because soap shouldn't smell like food if we want to avoid these kinds of situations, people!

But I've never mistaken food for soap before. That's where the woman in this story and I differ.

As it turns out, she failed to give her suspiciously orange-colored soap a good once-over before washing her hands.

In fact, according to her viral Reddit post in r/funny, she actually spent days believing that a cheddar-looking soap bar was indeed just soap, despite the fact that it wasn't exactly foaming up when wet.

Of course, the woman eventually stopped to really think about the situation and came to the conclusion that her soap was actually a block of cheese.

She posted the above photo to Reddit, along with the caption, "Just realized my soap wasn’t working because it’s literally a block of cheese."

I'm sure she had to really swallow her pride (and possibly some mac and soap) to write that.

The woman went on to explain that she usually keeps a bar of yellow soap on her counter for washing her hands, so the mix up isn't entirely unreasonable.

“I use a liquid soap for the dishes, bar soap like this is gentler on my hands after I do chores if that makes any sense,” she wrote.

“It was a couple days of 'Why isn’t this foaming?!' I come to realize it was a dried-out square of Tillamook sharp cheddar cheese."

Of course, Reddit didn't hold back in the comments because come on, you really didn't suspect something sooner??

"There's a big problem if you're confusing cheese for soap," this person wrote.

"I don't... where was the cheese sitting for you to mistake it for soap?" one confused user implored, prompting the woman to reply that she picked up the rock-hard brick off the counter, which had apparently been sitting there for awhile.

“I suspect I left it out when I was intoxicated and just forgot.”

Some people were actually pretty sympathetic and agreed that the cheese does sort of look like soap.

I mean, I suppose if you really squint your eyes and tilt your head to the side and imagine a bar of soap...

Yeah, I definitely see it now.

Believe it or not, this actually isn't the first time a post about a cheesy, soapy mix up has gone viral on Reddit.

A while ago, this post got people's attention when the user revealed, "I replaced my friend's fancy soap with a block of fancy cheese."

There doesn't seem to have been any update provided as to whether their friend believed that fancy-looking cheese was a bar of soap, but we can only assume they did because this one at least looks like it could pass for artisan soap.

But cheddar? Really?
