Sometimes we spend so much time appreciating the amazing, colorful birds of other countries that we forget to look out our window and see the beauty right here at home.

I have a habit of seeing an incredible rainbow bird like this and just assuming that it's native to somewhere far away and tropical.
But this little guy actually makes his home in Mexico and the Southern U.S.
That's because they prefer to spend their time foraging for seeds in low, dense brush.
A feeder placed lower to the ground and near some dense brush is more likely to attract them than one hanging high in a tree.
Migration season takes them closer to the Gulf Coast on their way to Mexico to spend the winter.
