Ikea Launches Free Program That Lets People Design A Bee Home

We all know that bees are great pollinators and that a lot of plants rely on them to reproduce. Unfortunately, the bee population is way down due to human impact, climate change, and invasive species.

So Ikea has started a new project to help protect bees and encourage people to take action to preserve their habitats by making DIY Bee Homes.

Ikea's SPACE10 Innovation hub has partnered up with Bakken & Bæck and designer Tanita Klein to develop these easy to build DIY bee homes.

You can download an open-source bee home design for free and just build it yourself quickly at home.

Did you know that 90% of all bees are solitary bees? This means that they live alone and not in a huge beehive.

But since they're great pollinators, one solitary bee can provide as much pollination as 120 honeybees. Wow!

Therefore, all they need to survive is just a place with small holes where they can hide.

These habitats protect them from moisture and weather. There, they can also store pollen and lay their eggs. So, a small Bee House is perfect for these bees!

This project was started in order to make it easier for people to help preserve the solitary bee population in their neighborhood.

It's also a way to encourage people from all walks of life to take action today. That's amazing.

The best way to construct your bee home is to find your local CNC machine-owner who can build you a bee home down to all the specifications of your choosing.

The designer of this bee home, Tanita Klein, worked tirelessly to make sure the home looked very aesthetically pleasing.

She wanted it to stand out as if it was almost a free-standing sculpture to add more beauty to any surroundings.
