Doting Grandpa Builds Backyard Coaster For Grandson While Stuck In Lockdown

A Washington, D.C. grandpa has recently gone viral after personally building his grandson an unbelievably cool wooden roller coaster track in their backyard while amusement parks around the country remain closed.

Video of the adorable pair putting the homemade coaster to good use was posted to Twitter where it understandably blew up, amassing nearly 6 million views in just a matter of days.

Construction appears to have begun on May 3 when the daughter of the grandpa in the video tweeted about the project.

"When my dad outside building my son a roller coaster," user @HUNNITBANDBRIA tweeted.

In the comments, she explained that her father is 52 and promised eager users that she would definitely keep them updated on the status of the DIY coaster. And she certainly stayed true to her word.

A few weeks later, she tweeted a video showing the ingenious coaster's progress and her dad and son taking it for a test ride.

In the sweet clip, the grandpa can be seen jogging alongside his delighted grandson as he rides in what appears to be a cart crafted out of a toy plastic car and four wooden wheels.

The rest of the unfinished coaster track, made out of PVC pipe and wood, seems to be elevated on a trash can, cinder blocks, and wooden rods.

Video of the final product was shared just two days later, and suffice it to say, this is one *super sweet* coaster.

The track's supports have been replaced by sturdy wooden beams anchored to the yard's fence, and the cart itself has been given some final touches with a full coat of blue paint to make it really shine.

People online have been flooding the video's comment section to applaud this grandpa's incredible carpentry skills, and his imagination.

"Everyone with design/build experience has 'backyard roller coaster' written in a notebook somewhere," this user pointed out. "Engineers, carpenters, pipefitters — everyone. This man is actually going and doing it. So cool."

Another user added, "I’m picturing it going all the way around the yard when it’s finished!"

There doesn't seem to be any plans for track expansion right now, but honestly it doesn't appear to be a necessity by any means.

While the lockdown continues and amusement parks remain closed all across the country, it can be hard to find ways to keep ourselves and our children entertained.

This grandpa saw a need, as well as an opportunity to put his carpentry skills to work. The result? A fantastic, homemade backyard coaster, and plenty of wonderful memories shared between a doting grandfather and his grandson.
