Floyd Mayweather Set To Pay For George Floyd's Funeral Services

Although the May 25 death of 46-year-old George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer has sent shock waves not only across the United States, but the world at large, it can be easy to lose focus on the tragedy in the face of the ongoing social upheaval that followed it.

For Floyd's family, this was a sudden and devastating loss of someone who made every day more worthwhile for them. It's hard to cope with such a loss under any circumstances, but the scars can never heal completely when that loss comes from the violent and shocking situation that befell Floyd.

Nevertheless, actions that help whatever healing is possible become more important than ever at times like these and a champion boxer has reached out with a particularly powerful gesture.

Soon after George Floyd's death, retired undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather made his intentions to pay for the man's funeral clear.

As USA Today reported, Mayweather reached out to Floyd's family with this offer, which involves covering the costs of services in Floyd's hometown of Houston set to take place on June 9.

This communication between Mayweather and the fmaily was confirmed by Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions.

As Ellerbe said, "He’ll probably get mad at me for saying that, but yes, he is definitely paying for the funeral."

From the sounds of it, Ellerbe was right to be so confident in his statement.

As USA Today reported, Floyd's family has accepted Mayweather's offer and in addition to the funeral itself, he will cover some additional, but unspecified expenses.

This isn't the only gesture to honor Floyd's memory that Mayweather has offered to support.

As USA Today reported, he has also pledged to cover the cost of memorial services in Minnesota and North Carolina.

This is also not the only time Mayweather has extended such an offer.

When Mayweather won the WBC super featherweight championship in 1998, his first, he did so by defeating Genaro Hernandez.

Thirteen years later, Hernandez would succumb to cancer and Mayweather ended up covering his funeral expenses as well.

The gesture clearly remains appreciated.
