5-Month-Old 'Miracle Baby' Beats Coronavirus After 32 Days In Coma

A couple from Brazil have hailed their 5-month-old son a "miracle baby" after he was recently declared coronavirus-free following 32 days spent in a coma, CNN reported.

Wagner Andrade and his wife, Viviane Monteiro, say their son, Dom, tested positive for the deadly virus just a few months after he was born, but now he's finally leaving the hospital just in time for his 6-month birthday.

The couple isn't sure how Dom came into contact with the virus, but believe he may have contracted it while visiting with a relative.

"My wife noticed this noise at the end of his breathing," Andrade told CNN. "We called a few doctors and one of them told us to record a video. After she saw it, she ordered us to take him immediately to the hospital."

At the first hospital the family brought their son to, doctors didn't immediately test Dom for the coronavirus.

"He had some difficulty breathing so the doctors thought it was a bacterial infection," Andrade explained. "But the medication didn't work and he got worse."

That was when he and his wife decided to seek a second opinion and brought Dom to Pro-Cardiaco hospital in Rio de Janeiro. There he tested positive for the virus, and it would there he would spend the next 54 days fighting it — 32 of those days spent in a coma.

After a lengthy battle with the deadly virus, Dom successfully beat it and has now been cleared to finally leave the hospital.

His parents say his recovery is a "miracle", particularly considering all their baby went through during his arduous fight.

"First, I felt relieved, and then indescribable happiness," Andrade said. "We were longing to get him back home for more than 50 days."

It was a hard-fought battle, but little Dom is now heading home with his family once and for all.

In fact, he'll be settling in just in time for his six-month birthday on June 14.

His parents say they plan on celebrating with their beloved baby boy, and will be virtually joined by their relatives to mark the special occasion as well.
