'Scooby-Doo' Screenwriter James Gunn Tried To Make Velma A Lesbian: 'The Studio Just Kept Watering It Down'

LGBTQ+ representation has taken quite some time to get some space to breathe when it comes to Hollywood, and even now, it has a long way to go.

In fact, it was revealed just how much work we have to do when James Gunn threw a studio under the bus for not allowing Velma to be a lesbian in the Scooby-Doo movies.

*Scooby-Doo* screenwriter James Gunn recently revealed something that made Twitter quite literally blow up.

Warner Bros.

As it turns out, he wanted to make Velma Dinkley, portrayed by Linda Cardellini, a lesbian!

This was quite shocking for a lot of people!

It all started with Gunn answering a message for a third *Scooby-Doo* movie. Honestly, who knew this was something people really wanted?

In his replies, there was a comment asking to make Velma a lesbian.

As it turns out, Gunn actually wanted that from the beginning of the movie.

"I tried! In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script." he said.

"But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel)."

Of course, since then, the hashtag #ReleaseTheGunnCut has been trending on Twitter.

There were some flooding his mentions being hateful, but we have nothing of love for this! LGBTQ+ representation is extremely important.
