After weeks of speculation, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has finally selected his running mate: Senator Kamala Harris. In doing so, Biden made history, making Senator Harris, whose mother was born in India and father in Jamaica, both the first Black American and the first Asian American chosen for a major party's presidential ticket.
Two women have previously run as vice-presidential candidates: Sarah Palin in 2008, and Geraldine Ferraro in 1984. Neither was elected.
Harris's work in the Senate has also brought her into conflict with many members of the Trump administration, notably grilling former Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his nomination and confirmation process.
Harris's own presidential bid came to an end in December 2019 due to a shortage of campaign funds.
At 55, Harris is more than 20 years younger than Biden, and he has called himself a "bridge" to the next generation of Democratic leaders, CNN reported.
Nevertheless, Harris brings decades of experience as a prosecutor and nearly two terms as Attorney General of California before being elected to the Senate in 2016.
