I may have dogs now, but for years, my family was a cat family. Even though I later realized that I was mildly allergic to them all along, I still love those furry jerks.

Often, the key to picking out who loves cats from a distance and who has actually lived with them is whether or not that person will admit that felines are kind of The Worst. We just love them anyway, because they are also kind of The Best too.

The thing about having cats — or any pet, really — is that you need to be okay with a bit of chaos.

I’ve had plenty of cats who came when called or knew exactly when a comforting cuddle would be appreciated. Still, compared to my needy pups who can’t even be in a different room than me, cats are certainly more independent.

And yes, they can be completely awful sometimes.

One of my dogs was originally raised in a house full of cats and even he does the thing where he stands on my boob with little acknowledgement of the pain I am in from it.

I still love the furry jerk, though.
