Halsey Is Being Called Out For 'Cultural Appropriation' After Wearing Box Braids

It's not unusual for celebrities to get called out for cultural appropriation or even blackfishing when they sport a hairstyle that has historically been worn by people of color, particularly traditionally Black hairstyles, like box braids or dreadlocks.

It's a fairly common occurrence for the musician Halsey, as fans tend to forget that the singer is actually half-Black herself.

Halsey has been burning up the music scene for years now.

You probably know her best for her hits like "Closer" and "Without Me."

And if you don't, well, you should listen to them. They're true bops.

She also spends a lot of time as an activist.

In May of this year, she joined the Los Angeles protests after the death of George Floyd. The next month, she launched The Black Creators Fund which provides financial support, resources, and a platform to Black creators.

Since then, she has been using her platform to promote the fund and many of the Black creators who have taken advantage of it.

For example, she shared the bio of 27-year-old Asata Maisé, a designer who uses reclaimed and true vintage materials in the process of her garment making.

Halsey also announced an upcoming show with Sydney Sweeney.

"I am the luckiest girl in the world because I get to make my acting debut with my favorite human-being @sydney_sweeney , on a tv adaptation of an amazing book by @jessicagoodman , to be written/adapted + directed by one of the greatest @annabelleattanasio and wildest of all I will also be a PRODUCER on the series with some of my idols JEAN-MARC VALLÉE + NATHAN ROSS @crazyrosefilms with Sydney’s Fifty-Fifty Films @fiftyfiftyfilms ! You guys are gonna fall in love with The Players Table. I simply cannot wait.... photos by @samdameshek," she shared.

To promote the show, she recently shared this photo on her Instagram with Sydney.

In the series of photographs, Halsey can be seen sporting box braids, a hairstyle consisting of thick braids that resemble boxes on the scalp.

Some fans immediately began calling Halsey out for the perceived appropriation of Black culture through the hairstyle.

"Ma'am, not the braids," one commenter wrote on Instagram.

"Um, congrats, I love you so much, but the braids are not a good look on white girls..." one commenter wrote.

However, many fans were forgetting that Halsey is half-Black.

Halsey had shared this photo with her dad on Father's Day, surprising many fans who did not realize she was mixed race.

Other fans immediately came to Halsey's defense on the issue.

"Every 6 months fake woke twitter tries to “expose” halsey for cultural appropriation making huge clowns of themselves only to find out she’s black," one fan tweeted.

Another wrote on Instagram, "People should do a little research before they criticize her braids."

Halsey herself hasn't responded to the accusations.

Fortunately, Halsey has lots of fans who will defend the singer when accused of appropriating a culture that she already belongs to!
