It's truly inspiring that kids are learning more about the importance of protecting the environment, and heartening that Lego truly listened to them.
In response to requests from kids, Lego announced recently that it will stop using plastic bags inside its boxed sets and replace them with paper ones.
The Danish toymaker will start making the switch in 2021, and expects plastic bags to be completely phased out in the next five years.
The bags, which are included in the boxed sets, are usually used to hold loose bricks.
The plastic that the company has been using doesn't disintegrate properly. Instead, it breaks into tiny pieces that are consumed by birds and other animals, which is harmful to their wellbeing.
Meanwhile, the paper bags with which they'll be replaced, are recyclable and also easier for kids to open. That's a win-win!
Lego is not the only large brand that has been taking this route. Monopoly maker Hasbro, and others, have also announced plans to eliminate plastics in their packaging.
While the Lego bricks themselves are also made of plastic, the toy maker is trying to find alternatives there, too.
For now though, children asked and Lego delivered. We think this is a step that's definitely worth celebrating.
