Heroic Dog Leads Rescuers To Brook Where 84-Year-Old Blind Owner Fell In

When her 84-year-old blind owner fell into a freezing cold brook, Samantha the yellow Labrador didn't just sit by and wait for someone to help.

Instead, the heroic dog took action and personally directed rescuers to the exact spot where her elderly human was still stuck in the frigid water, effectively saving his life.

On the night of January 5, a woman in Limington, Maine, contacted local authorities after hearing shouting coming from the woods behind her home.

According to a Facebook post from the York County Sheriff's Office, Sgt. Steve Thistlewood and other responding officers arrived at the woman's house to find a dog on the property who was "barking profusely."

"In a scene out of a classic Lassie movie, the dog kept barking until Sergeant Thistlewood followed her," the post reads.

As it turns out, the legally blind man and his Labrador, Samantha, had ended up in those woods after he'd unsuccessfully attempted to put her on a dog run, which resulted in her running away.

He'd ventured into the woods to try to find her, but ended up tripping on something, falling down an embankment and rolling into the frigid brook. Though he spent some time shouting for help, he'd eventually stopped after becoming exhausted as he succumbed to the 30-degree temperature outside.

When police found the man, he was getting hypothermia and his body temperature had dropped to about 84 degrees, making him susceptible to a heart attack.

Thanks to Samantha's urgent barking and insistence, they were able to find the man, rescue him from the brook, and get him the medical attention he desperately needed.

Good girl, Sammy!
