Garth Brooks Defends Performing At Joe Biden's Inauguration: 'A Statement Of Unity'

Being asked to perform at a presidential inauguration must be an extremely high honor for any celebrity, regardless of political affiliation. Country musician Garth Brooks certainly seems to feel that way, as he's now spoken out to defend his decision to perform at the inauguration of Joe Biden on January 20, despite being a registered Republican.

It was recently announced that Garth Brooks would be joining the list of performers at the inauguration ceremony for President-elect Joe Biden.

Many were surprised that the country musician and Republican singer would be performing at the ceremony, with some expressing the sentiment that Garth was "a traitor" for accepting the job.

Garth has now spoken out about his decision.

Garth initially joked that he would likely be "the only Republican at the ceremony."

However, in a press conference, Garth emphasized that "This is not a political statement, this is a statement of unity. This is kind of how I get to serve this country."

Garth continued, saying he did not accept the gig based on political party affiliations.

"I've played for every president there is, since Carter, with the exception of Reagan," Garth went on.

"This is an honor for me to get to serve... and it's one of the things that, if my family is around, no matter who the president-elect is, it's an honor to be asked," Garth continued.

Garth teased that he had a few song choices in mind for the performance.

"We were lucky enough to do 'We Shall Be Free' at the Obama inauguration, so I don't think you'll see that here," he said.
