Nicole Kidman Speaks Out After Backlash Over Casting As Lucille Ball: I'll 'Try My Best'

If you're like me, you watched enough I Love Lucy and Lucille Ball's other works that her face, voice, mannerisms, and everything else are essentially burned into your brain. Lucille Ball had a way of creating a character who was so recognizable but so hard to imitate, and that's going to be a BIG problem for anyone who's trying to bring the star to the big screen again.

Lucille Ball was an absolute treasure and an icon.

She radiated warmth, charisma, and fun, and was pretty much THE master of physical comedy. Every time I watch the I Love Lucy episode where she works at the chocolate factory, I laugh JUST as hard as I did the first time I saw it!

So when they announced a new movie about Lucille and Desi in real life was being made, obviously the pressure was ON.

When it was revealed that the two stars would be played by Javier Bardem and Nicole Kidman, the reaction was... mixed, to say the least.

There were a lot of people who didn't think Nicole had the chops to pull off Lucille in the way that such a legendary star deserved.

Some fans felt that Debra Messing would have been the obvious choice.

After all, the Will And Grace star has ALREADY impersonated Lucille on television, absolutely nailing the part while looking pretty much IDENTICAL to her to boot!

Following the past few weeks of controversy, Nicole has finally spoken out about it.

“I was like, ‘Yeah, I would love to give it a go,’” Nicole said of accepting the part.

“With Aaron’s words and his direction and Javier," Nicole said, "that’s kind of a wonderful prospect to, you know. But yikes, off we go."

I mean, I certainly can't blame her for saying yes! If I got offered this gig, I'd take it in a HEARTBEAT!

Nicole said she wanted to "Give it a go. Try my best—see if I can do it.”

“I love Lucille, having looked now and delved into her,” Nicole said. “She’s an amazing woman. I’m very excited for people to see what Aaron found out about her and the way he’s interpreted Desi and Lucy and the way that it’s so rich."

"I didn’t know any of this.”

I guess I can't blame Nicole for being excited about the prospect, and who knows? Maybe with the right makeup and wig, Nicole might be a better fit than we were expecting — after all, nobody thought Kristen Stewart would make a good Princess Diana, but the first look proved otherwise.

What do you think?

Are you willing to give Nicole a chance to bring everything we love about Lucille to the big screen, or do you still maintain that it should've gone to someone else? Let us know how you feel in the comments!

I think she miiiiight just surprise us!
