There Is A Girl Scout Troop Made Up Entirely Of Girls In The Homeless System

Girl Scouts are known for their bravery, unity and friendship.

While they often pride themselves on their diversity, one Girl Scout troop is certainly unlike any other.

Girl Scout troop 6000 is a New York City-based troop which includes girls from the homeless system who are determined manifest change for those in need everywhere. They prove that no matter where someone is, they deserve to experience friendship and leadership opportunities.

These girls are inspiring us all.

Across New York City, Girl Scout 6000 is a program dedicated to give girls in the New York shelter system the opportunity to join the Girl Scouts.

As TODAY reported, troop 6000 believes that with so much change and sometimes very unique adversity that girls without housing security experience, the need for a safe and supportive community was strong.

Housing shouldn't be a barrier to opportunity.

Children who experience housing insecurity often have limited exposure to educational resources, role models, and extracurricular activities.

Although these girls may not have some of the privileges others might have, they have certainly made their mark on the world with being the first ever homeless Girl Scout troop.

They work hard every single step of the way.

Like tradition Girl Scout troops, these young ladies work hard to earn badges, but they aren't just driven by rewards. For them, community is everything.

With shelter stay typically only lasting up to 18 months, many of these girls are accustomed to moving around a lot. Fortunately, Troop 6000 is a home for them to always return to.

People are rallying for these girls to succeed.

A Twitter post urging people to support these Girl Scouts recently went viral as people were quickly impressed and inspired by the resiliency of these girls and the ambition of the program. Ultimately, just about everyone in the comments agreed, this is a step in the right direction.

If you want to support troop 6000, consider buying your annual haul of Girl Scout Cookies directly through them, which you can do so here. As with any other troop, 100% of proceeds made through cookie sales goes directly back to the troop for badge activities, uniforms, and field trips.
