Every state has a thing it's known for and forever associated with, like South Dakota and Mount Rushmore, Maine and lobsters, and Florida and Disney World. Of course, for Idaho, it's potatoes. They're versatile vegetables — mashed, boiled, baked, fried, or hashed and browned, they're a staple at every meal — but they're not the most exciting things.
But you can't say that Idaho hasn't made the most of their taters!
The giant potato-shaped hotel room just opened up, and it's already listed and renting on Airbnb. It's suitably located in a field in South Boise, with a view of the nearby Owyhee Mountains.
Rather, it was a promotional spud that toured the nation on a flatbed truck for the Idaho Potato Commission. Just in case people weren't aware of potatoes, I suppose.
Kristie Wolfe, a local small-home developer, knew exactly what to do: turn it into a money-making property.
From the outside, you might wonder what she was thinking. From the inside, however, it looks like she might be onto something.
Although the walls are a snowy, potato-fleshy white, it's not unwelcoming, cold, or stark. It's a nice space, with homey, stylish furnishings.
There's a queen size bed, so it sleeps two, plus a convenient kitchenette, fireplace, air conditioning, a bathroom, and enough houseplants to make it feel like a cozy little home.
But hey, what do you want from a potato? It's also not going to eat into your fun money like a fancier place would — a night at the Big Idaho Potato Hotel will set you back $200, plus a $31 service fee and $16 in occupancy taxes, for a grand total of $247.
