Woman Awarded $7,700 As 'Housework Compensation' In Landmark Divorce Court Ruling

People often underestimate the hard work that goes into taking care of a home and family. Often, those duties are assigned to women, and this is no easy feat. An entire household is a lot to fall on one single person's shoulders.

In a landmark divorce court ruling in China, one woman found herself awarded more than $7,000 for all of her hard work to keep the household going.

After her husband decided to leave her, the woman identified only as Wang asserted that he owed her big time for five years of domestic labor.

According to CNN, she took him to district court and demanded thousands of dollars for being the sole person caring for both their son and their house.

China's new civil code helped Wang win her case.

While she didn't get the approximate $24,700 in restitutions that she asked for, she did get an impressive 50,000 yuan (about $7,700 USD) thanks to China's new civil code which protects the rights of those who take on more household and parenting work than their significant other.

Wang's story became popular very quickly.

Her story was posted on Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter, and before long, it's hashtag had over 500 million views. This kind of ruling has been historically uncommon in China, as women's rights have not been given enough attention.

This ruling was a major breakthrough for gender equality and feminism in the country.

It makes sense that homemakers are getting more compensation during divorce because of the sacrifice it takes to put a home and family before themselves. This means that dreams are deferred and opportunities are missed for the person working alone to keep everything together.
