Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and the husband of The Queen Of England, passed away on April 9th, 2021. While the world mourns the long-serving monarch, some have been wondering what the protocol following his passing will be.
What Happens Now That Prince Philip Has Passed Away
Prince Phillip was born on June 10th, 1921.
He was born Prince Phillip of Greece and Denmark. He joined the British Royal Navy at the age of 18 when he began corresponding with the then-Princess Elizabeth.
Prince Phillip and Queen Elizabeth have been married since 1947.
Phillip was the longest-serving consort in British history, having gained the title in 1952, although he had stopped attending public engagements in 2017 at the age of 96.
The Royal Family confirmed Prince Philip's passing in an emotional statement.
"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle," the statement read.
The statement continued.
"The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss. Further announcements will be made in due course," it ended.
While fans shared their condolences and grief at the loss of Prince Philip, many wondered what happens following the death of the Duke of Edinburgh.
The procedure for Prince Philip's passing is code-named "Operation Forth Bridge."
According to The Independent, following Philip's passing, flags lowered to half-mast, newsreaders will wear black, and Members of Parliament will wear black armbands.
Her Majesty The Queen will enter an official period of mourning where her state affairs will be put on hold.
This period of mourning will likely last 8 days.
However, the mourning period can be extended another 30 days if the Queen desires.
The Independent reports that it is likely Prince Philip will have a military funeral, given his service in the Royal Navy.
Prince Philip's passing does not effect the line of succession.
The line of succession remains as follows: Prince Charles is first in line for the throne, followed by Prince William, and Prince William's three children, George, Charlotte, and Louis.
Tributes have been pouring in for Prince Philip.
"I can't imagine what Queen Elizabeth must be feeling right now, she's lost her mum,her sister now her beloved husband. Heartbreaking. Rest In Peace Prince Phillip," read one tweet.
