Goodwill Employee Finds $42,000 In Donated Sweater And Helps Find Its Owner

There are a few defining points in a person's life where their morals are tested. For one Goodwill employee in Oklahoma, that point came after making an incredible discovery hidden within the donation pile and was faced with a decision: should she keep what she found, or do the right thing and give it back?

In that moment, her character shined through and set a great example for many to follow.

For those employees, properly handling and sorting those finds is an integral part of their job. Be it quality control or categorizing, inspecting donations carefully is important.

While checking over some recent donations, one Goodwill employee found something unbelievable.

In Norman, Oklahoma, Andrea Lessing found money wrapped between two sweaters. Though finding a few bucks here and there isn't uncommon, what she discovered was far beyond that.

In those sweaters were stacks upon stacks of $100 bills which, when totaled, equaled out to an incredible $42,000.

Money can rarely be traced back to the owner, but in this case, the cash came bundled with identifying documents.

Regarding the question of whether to return it or not, Lessing was quick to make her decision.

“I have a daughter, I love her very much and you can’t put a price on my daughter,” she told KFOR. “I know what could be risked stealing that money and I do believe in karma. I do believe that if you do something good, something good will come back to you.”

And indeed, something good came back to her upon returning the money to its rightful owner.

After she gave the money back, the owner, who wished to remain anonymous, asked Goodwill if they could give her $1,000 as a thank you, which she graciously accepted and plans to use for her daughter's upcoming birthday.

This was the largest cash find in Oklahoma, and ranks among the highest Goodwill find across the globe.
