There are many people who dream of one day having children, but aren't able for a variety of different reasons. One obstacle that some women face is infertility, which can certainly take an emotional toll after years of trying and failing to start a family.
However, one woman not only got pregnant after years of infertility issues, but her mother, who agreed to be her surrogate, also carried a second baby for her.
This woman went from no babies to two little miracles in less than a year!
As ABC News reported, Kelsi and Kyle Pierce from Minnesota had been trying everything to get pregnant. From in-vitro fertilization to even undergoing multiple surgeries, it was an agonizing process.
Kelsi's low ovarian reserve made it nearly impossible for her to carry a baby because her uterus lining is very thin.
After so many attempts, doctors were able to obtain some successful embryos. However, Kelsi's body was deemed unfit by her doctor to carry a baby. So, the couple was told they could either adopt or get a surrogate to carry one of the embryos, which could cost upwards of $100,000.
After accumulating considerable debt from previous pregnancy attempts, the couple couldn't afford a surrogate. It was a truly painful time.
After hearing of her daughter's despair, Kelsi's 52-year-old mother, Lisa Rutherford, went to see her own doctor to inquire about being the couple's surrogate. She had heard of other women in their 50's being surrogates for their daughters, and felt compelled to help her daughter and son-in-law.
"When you have kids you want their life to be better, easier, more fulfilling than your life," Lisa told ABC News. "I just thought I don’t have $100,000 to hand you, but this is what I can do to make your dream come true. It wasn’t even a question."
After being cleared by her doctor, there was an embryo transfer and Pierce's mother was indeed pregnant with her daughter's baby.
It tested positive and after a doctor's confirmation, the couple discovered that the unbelievable happened: Kelsi was pregnant at the same time as her mother, and the couple was now expecting two newborns only a month apart.
Despite hers being a high risk pregnancy with some complications, Kelsi brought a healthy baby girl, Ava, into the world on November 23. Earlier, on October 1st, her mother gave birth to the couple's other baby girl, Everly.
"Every time something is hard or I’m tired, I remind myself that this is my dream finally coming true," Kelsi told ABC News. "I appreciate it so much more because of how long it took and how much struggle it took."
