Alocasia Leaves Look Like Bioluminescent Sci-fi Plants In The Sun

The Alocasia plant (otherwise known as Elephant Ear or African Mask) is a very popular house plant variety native to Asia.

With a unique arrowhead shape and dark leaves ranging from red to green, one of their most distinctive traits is their vibrant, luminescent veining.

Including a massive range of subspecies, the dramatic plants can grow anywhere from six inches to six feet tall.

The near-translucent veins capture the light of the sun.

Considered a tropical plant, an Alocasia flourishes in bright, yet indirect light. Placed near a window, the sun's rays are captured by the veins on each leaf, absorbing into them to create a near-dazzling effect.

Seen from below, the vibrant display can seem almost magical, like a bioluminescent plant on a faraway planet.

How to care for your Alocasia plant:

Preferring warmer climates, Alocasia do well in temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

If the temperatures drop below their preferred temperature the plants will fall dormant, at which time it's important not to over-water them (potentially causing fungal infections).

How to know if your plant is getting the right amount of water.

In terms of in-season watering, Alocasia fall into the same field as Goldilocks; preferring to live somewhere in the middle of not too wet and not too dry.

If the top few inches of soil have gone dry but the bottom remains moist, that's your window.
