John Travolta Shares How He Talked About Kelly Preston's Death With His Son

When celebrities are known for being outgoing and expressive, we find ourselves being drawn to their energy and it's often not long before we start channelling their iconic expressions through memes.

But that focus on the brighter aspects of their personalities can make it easy to forget that even the most fun-loving people in our lives are often dealing with a great deal of pain behind the scenes. And in the case of legendary actor John Travolta, it's all too apparent where that pain comes from.

After Kelly Preston died, her husband John Travolta revealed that he shared some intense words of advice with his youngest son, Ben.

But while the "death talk" often rivals the birds and the bees when it comes to uncomfortable subjects parents struggle to discuss with their kids, Travolta confronted the issue head-on with his 10-year-old son.

Understandably, young Ben was grappling with some serious anxieties after losing his mom Kelly Preston to cancer in July of 2020.

According to Today, Travolta discussed how he addressed his son's worries on Kevin Hart's Hart to Heart talk show.

Namely, Ben was concerned that Travolta would soon pass away himself.

As Travolta told Hart, "My son has always wanted truth, and he's only accepting truth."

So he was committed to giving Ben precisely that without sugar coating it, saying, "I'm going to tell you the truth about life. Nobody knows when they're going to go, when they're gonna stay."

He then went on to say, "Your brother left at 16, too young. Your mother left at 57, that was too young, but who's to say? I could die tomorrow. You could. Anybody can. It’s part of life."

"You don't know exactly. You just do your best at trying to live the longest you can."

But without expecting to, Travolta would end up seeing a power he didn't recognize in his own words after Ben asked him how it feels to be in his 60s.

His initial response to this question was, "You know what, Ben? I can't believe it. I can't believe I'm in the last chapter of my life. I can't believe it. I’m like, eternally 21, I don't understand being in my 60s."

However, this led Ben to ask if he remembered what life was like for him 30 years ago. And when he said that he did, Ben replied, "Just 30 years ago seemed like a long time. Don’t you think you have 30 more years in your life to live?"

For Travolta, this conversation changed his entire outlook on life. As he put it, "I realized that it's about viewpoint in life that allows you to settle down about something. There ain’t nothing wrong with 30 years. But yet, before he said that, I was thinking that, 'Oh this is my last? How sad.'"

It sounds like they've been teaching each other quite a lot after the hard days they've shared together.
