Rihanna Made Barbados’ ‘National Hero’ After Country Celebrates Becoming Republic

Rihanna was recently awarded one of Barbados' highest honors during a celebration for the country officially becoming a republic.

The latest award for the 33-year-old singer and entrepreneur comes after having already been made an official ambassador for the country back in 2018. Fans of Rihanna were quick to take to social media to share their praise for her latest honor.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley awarded Rihanna, full name Robyn Rihanna Fenty, her new title during a ceremony which celebrated Barbados becoming a republic.

Back in 2018, Rihanna was also made an official Ambassador for Youth and Culture for her homeland of Barbados.

This means that Rihanna's title is now The Right Honourable Robyn Rihanna Fenty.

"On behalf of a grateful nation, but an even prouder people, we therefore present to you, the designee, for national hero of Barbados, ambassador Robyn Rihanna Fenty may you continue to shine like a diamond," the prime minister said as Rihanna stepped up to receive the honor.

Rihanna's achievement was praised by fans and celebrities across social media.

Some fans took to Twitter to write such messages as: "Rihanna's career and life trajectory has been insanely incredible. Like I just can't believe my sis is doing THIS! Blessings, hard work, authenticity, and her advocating for herself…look at what Rihanna made. I'm in AWE."

Celebrities such as Danny Trejo also shared their love on Twitter.

Rihanna is now just one of two of Barbados' National Heroes who are still living.

85-year-old cricketer Sir Garfield was awarded the honor back in 1998 and is the only other person with the title currently living.

Barbados' former prime minister David Thompson also named February 22nd as National Rihanna Day back in 2008. Though it is not a bank holiday, the day is widely recognised.

Some fans also joked that Rihanna had now been crowned "Queen of Barbados."

Prince Charles also gave a speech at the ceremony and was seen shaking hands with Rihanna.

"The creation of this Republic offers a new beginning, but it also marks a point on a continuum, a milestone on the long road you have not only travelled, but which you have built," Prince Charles was quoted as saying by The Mirror.

Barbados entering a new era as a republic is a significant moment in history — and for Rihanna this will not be a celebration forgotten quickly.
