It can be difficult to comprehend the scale of damage a storm like Hurricane Dorian can cause.
But we don't often see storms like Hurricane Dorian.
Not only is it one of the strongest storms ever recorded, but, after first making landfall and devastating Great Abaco island, it stalled and parked over Grand Bahama, battering the island with wind gusts up to 220 mph and a storm surge of up to 15 feet.
Satellite images in particular show that much of Grand Bahama was left underwater by the storm.
"We are in the midst of an historic tragedy," said Prime Minister Hubert Minnis. "The devastation is unprecedented and extensive."
Little more than the high ground in Freeport is unaffected — everything else has disappeared under the waves, submerged by the storm surge.

We can only hope that people in The Bahamas have managed to stay safe throughout this historic, unrelenting storm.
