Satellite Images Show Much Of Bahamas Under Water After Hurricane Dorian

It can be difficult to comprehend the scale of damage a storm like Hurricane Dorian can cause.

But we don't often see storms like Hurricane Dorian.

Not only is it one of the strongest storms ever recorded, but, after first making landfall and devastating Great Abaco island, it stalled and parked over Grand Bahama, battering the island with wind gusts up to 220 mph and a storm surge of up to 15 feet.

Images are starting to emerge that show just how much damage the storm has done, and it's absolutely mind-boggling.

Satellite images in particular show that much of Grand Bahama was left underwater by the storm.

"We are in the midst of an historic tragedy," said Prime Minister Hubert Minnis. "The devastation is unprecedented and extensive."

Side-by-side, you can see how the hurricane has thoroughly drenched and inundated the island paradise.

Little more than the high ground in Freeport is unaffected — everything else has disappeared under the waves, submerged by the storm surge.

At ground level, videos illustrating that 15-foot storm surge have started to trickle out.

Below is video shared on Twitter showing water lapping at floors on the second story of a home in Grand Bahama, with the stair well completely filled.

After sitting over Grand Bahama for more than 24 hours, Hurricane Dorian is expected to finally move along later on Tuesday.

We can only hope that people in The Bahamas have managed to stay safe throughout this historic, unrelenting storm.
