If you've never heard of it, it's a movie that writer-director Mike Flanagan did before he came out with The Haunting Of Hill House.

It's where he initially cut his teeth on horror.

So what is it about?

It's about this deaf writer who moves out into the woods to live a solitary life.

A sound decision in a horror movie, right? Then a masked killer breaks in and starts messing with her.

Why is it so scary?

Well, for a litany of reasons.

One, it plays with your senses, fading sound in and out, so you feel Maggie's (the deaf writer) senses.

In one scene someone gets stabbed outside her house, but of course, she doesn't hear it.

The movie is also tense as heck.

It seems that Mike Flanagan is more in the "creating suspense" camp of horror, rather than the jump out at you and spook you.

Also, the most terrifying part of the movie: it could happen to you.
