People Online Are Turning Lay's Chips Into Mashed Potatoes

Let me ask you a question: Do you like mashed potatoes? I'm a certified potato freak, ha, ha! After all, I grew up in Europe, and our diet consisted mostly of meat, potatoes, and bread. So this is right up my alley.

However, mashed potatoes do take some time to make. But wait, what if there was a faster way? Guess what? There actually is!

So how do you make mashed potatoes?

You have to peel the potatoes, wash them, boil them, add all the ingredients, and of course, mash them. That doesn't sound that quick. Am I right? Well, somebody decided to skip most of that.

Instead, what they did is pretty unorthodox — to say the least.

Are you ready for it? Get this they dumped the entire bag of chips into a boiling pot of water. OMG! What? What in the heck? Why?

I guess doing it this way saves you all that precious time.

Now all you need to do is boil the chips like you would regular potatoes. I don't know how I feel about that, ha, ha! What do you think so far?

Once the potato chips are cooked and look mushy enough, pour the water out.

Then drop the gooey mess back into the pot. Sounds familiar? Yes, that's what you do with regular boiled potatoes, too. Now you just mash the chips up.

Then when they're all mashed up, throw all the other ingredients into the pot.

Add butter, sour cream, regular cream, and some salt. And mash it all again until it looks like this. Doesn't it look exactly like mashed potatoes or what?

OMG, right?

So they might look alright, but how do they taste? That's the ultimate test. Isn't it? Get a load of this — according to people online they taste just like mashed potatoes. Ha, ha! I wasn't expecting that, I have to admit.

This particular tester, Matthew Merri of @matthewinthekitchen on TikTok, said the texture was a bit "funky".

But if you're in a pinch, this version will do just fine. Hmm, I don't know. I'm one who wouldn't want to sacrifice anything when it comes to my food.

So it seems that a lot of his viewers on TikTok want to take a hard pass at this.

Many of them commented with baffling questions like "why would you do this?" I have to say I kind of agree with them on this.

So what's the verdict?

Would you skip all the steps and do this instead the next time you want mashed potatoes? I think if taste and texture are important to you, stick to the old-fashioned way of doing it.
