Now, the Queer Eye star is coming forward with his journey and diagnosis with HIV in a preview of his book with the New York Times.
Van Ness revealed he was abused by an older boy from his childhood church, leading to many years of trauma and self-destructive behaviors including a drug addiction.
“These are issues that need to be talked about.”
In his memoir, Van Ness recalls the day he found out he was HIV-positive after collapsing at the salon he was working at in California when he was 25.
Jonathan has since cleaned up his act and hasn't touched hard drugs in years.
He concluded his interview, “These are all difficult subjects to talk about on a makeover show about hair and makeup. That doesn’t mean Queer Eye is less valid, but I want people to realize you’re never too broken to be fixed.”
