15+ Animals Who Think They're Being Cute But Are Creeping Us Out

Amy Pilkington 25 Oct 2019

The cuteness of much of the animal world isn't up for debate, and compelling arguments can be made for many "gross" species too. One person may look at a rat and see a plague lice-ridden rodent while another person sees a cute pet.

Still, no matter how cute an animal is, sometimes they just can't help being creepy. It may be just a natural instinct that we humans can't understand or just dumb luck, but sometimes even the cutest animals can creep us the heck out.

1. Is the spotlight just a warm spot to sit?

Reddit | 295DVRKSS

Or is this cat determined to live up to every single stereotype and superstition directed at black cats throughout history?

2. Now, I try to be open to the idea that hairless cats can be cute and affectionate.

But I draw the line at their paws. They look way too much like human hands and the look on this cat's face really isn't helping the situation.

3. This fox with melanism is beautiful and terrifying.

Reddit | Penkinvaltaaja

Melanism is basically the opposite of albinism. Instead of having no pigment, the skin (or fur, in this care) has too much and appears black.

Foxes like this are often called silver foxes.

4. Imagine you're out diving or snorkeling and looked down to see THIS staring up at you.

Reddit | carmelmarien

This is a stargazer that's buried itself into the sand to trick dinner into coming too close. It's totally natural behavior and totally terrifying.

Look out: they're venomous.

If you thought this tortoise was okay with being locked away in another room all day, you may need to reconsider.

6. Chickens usually look kind of dumb to me.

Reddit | JerryfromTomandJerry

But who knew that if you placed the camera just right, they'd give the tortoise a run for its money when it comes to Jack Nicholson impersonations.

7. This cat is beautiful, but what is up with that eye?

Reddit | Penkinvaltaaja

I couldn't find an explanation to go along with this picture, but it's both fascinating and really, really off-putting.

8. You know how owls are kind of cute? Rethink that.

Giphy

There is so much nope in this gif. The weird neck thing is already creepy, but then you add the one chowing down on a rodent and whatever the hell the second on the left is doing and it's nightmare fuel.

9. Sometimes being quick with the shutter button isn't a good thing.

I am both in awe of this image and creeped out by it. The red-eye doesn't help and nor does the random dude in the background.

10. You might argue that it is the flash and not the cats that make this situation creepy.

Reddit

But I would argue that those cats are clearly in the midst of a food-stealing caper and the fact that they appear to have almost succeeded is terrifying.

11. Today I learned that albino turtles kind of weird me out.

Reddit | Penkinvaltaaja

I usually find albinism fascinating and kind of beautiful, but something about this leatherback turtle just doesn't work for me.

12. These aren't cute marbles with emoji on them.

Reddit | markorokusaki

They are actually the eggs of the Green Shield Bug (Palomena prasina) and bug eggs should not have faces. Ever.

13. I'm torn about this one.

On one hand, this kind of reminds me of something that might have been made by the Jim Henson Creature Workshop, but on the other hand, sea shells shouldn't stare at me like that.

14. In the same vein, I think squirrels are pretty cute.

Reddit | Penkinvaltaaja

But this one has lost all the fur on its tail and suddenly looks like a mutated rat and I can't handle that.

15. This is another case of the camera flash making things so much worse.

Reddit | tara1

However, I would argue that knowing a horde of sheep were there in the dark, but being unable to see them would also be scary.

16. There is a reason cats tend to be witch familiars.

What is even happening here? The cat looks like an invisible hand has grabbed it by the scruff and pulled it away.

17. Doggo summoning circle.

Reddit

I like to think that they're summoning more doggos to cuddle and not some Eldritch Horror Pupper.

Also, this image informs me that I'd totally watch an all-dog remake of The Craft.

18. Got milk?

This cow is giving off the definition of a "threatening aura." If I woke up to find that face staring at me, I would close the curtains and lock the doors.

19. You know how goats are cute in a kind of oddball way? Not this one.

Reddit | emoposer

This one has four horns and has clearly come directly from the depths of hell. The lighting in the image really doesn't help.

20. "Cute rocks...with legs??"

Reddit | nikitaaar

I'm not sure I would ever call rocks cute, but since these are bloated ticks, it's way worse than just some weird legs.

Someone in the thread called them "Forbidden Gushers" and now I've lost my appetite.
