It's hard to imagine having as good a day as Ronnie Foster had when he finally got to check his last chemo treatment off his list. It's a huge moment, one that hopefully marks the defeat of an insidious and terrifying foe.
But for Ronnie, that was only half the good news.
"I was already happy because it was my last round of chemo," the retired North Carolina Department of Transportation worker told the NC Lottery. So, he decided to buy a lottery ticket.
So, he figured he would press his luck and use those winnings to buy another ticket. "At the last second, I decided to buy two tickets instead of one."
The first ticket came up empty, but the second one, not so much.
"I saw all those zeroes and I froze," he said. "I didn't believe it until I gave it to the clerk at the counter to scan. When it showed, 'Go to lottery headquarters,' I started shaking. I couldn’t believe it."
After taxes, he'll take home $141,501. "I have good insurance," he said, "but there is still some cost. This will make it a whole lot easier."
