Cancer Patient Wins $200,000 From Lotto Ticket On His Last Day Of Chemo

It's hard to imagine having as good a day as Ronnie Foster had when he finally got to check his last chemo treatment off his list. It's a huge moment, one that hopefully marks the defeat of an insidious and terrifying foe.

But for Ronnie, that was only half the good news.

It's no surprise that Ronnie was already in good spirits when he stopped at a convenience store on his way to see his doctor.

"I was already happy because it was my last round of chemo," the retired North Carolina Department of Transportation worker told the NC Lottery. So, he decided to buy a lottery ticket.

His meager $1 investment in a scratcher immediately got him another $5.

So, he figured he would press his luck and use those winnings to buy another ticket. "At the last second, I decided to buy two tickets instead of one."

The first ticket came up empty, but the second one, not so much.

On the second ticket, Ronnie won $200,000.

"I saw all those zeroes and I froze," he said. "I didn't believe it until I gave it to the clerk at the counter to scan. When it showed, 'Go to lottery headquarters,' I started shaking. I couldn’t believe it."

No surprise, Ronnie intends to use his winnings to pay down his medical expenses and save for the future.

After taxes, he'll take home $141,501. "I have good insurance," he said, "but there is still some cost. This will make it a whole lot easier."
