People Share Things They Didn’t Know About Their Spouse Until After The Wedding

Paddy Clarke

When you're getting married, it is crucial to make sure that they are the right person. While you could do with being able to know if the way they squeeze their toothpaste out drives you insane or not, it is very important to know that you truly love them and that you aren't going to be blindsided with a shocking secret after the honeymoon.

However, sometimes no matter how much time you spend with someone, there can be little secrets that remain hidden. Well, one person took to Reddit to find out what sorts of things people only found out about their spouses after the wedding, by asking, "Married people of Reddit, what's one thing you didn't learn about your spouse until after your wedding day?"

Below, I have gathered for you a varied selection box of the most hilarious, heartbreaking, and powerful stories that people had to share.

1. She Is A Hoarder

Instagram | eqkicks

"I discovered my wife is a hoarder and doesn't want to throw anything away. She's gotten better over the years, but it's still an issue." — JeffcoSteve

Hoarding is a really serious condition and can be more prevalent in people with conditions such as anxiety, depression, and other mental conditions. Hopefully, she continues to get better as time goes on!

2. Undercover Swimmer

Instagram | stam.1987

"She's a great swimmer. One day, after we'd be married for about seven years, we joined a gym with a swimming pool. She challenged me to a race. Ok, I thought, I'm a pretty good swimmer. I was surprised when she offered me a half-length head start - and then doubly surprised when despite my massive head start she beat me easily. Apparently she used to be a competitive swimmer at school. She's basically half-dolphin. But she'd never happened to mention it before." — CiderDrinker

At first, I was amazed by this and thought, "How could you not know how good a swimmer your wife is!?" and then I realized that I have absolutely no idea whether my girlfriend can even swim or not.

3. The End Of The Loaf Paradox

Instagram | courtneysbark

"I have a friend who was born and raised in Romania in a relatively poor family. His favorite section of a loaf of bread was the crusts on ether end (possibly even his favorite food in general) so when he got married (to a woman from Australia) he started leaving the crusts for her because they’re the best so he wanted her to have them.

"Well typically in Australia we throw away the end crusts, so when my friend left them she assumed he didn’t want them either and threw them away. They were married for years before he caught her tossing them and got confused." — thats_cripple_to_you

Right, this is a constant debate that me and my friends have (we don't have many interesting things to talk about), is the end piece on a loaf nice or not? I think it's amazing, and everyone who disagrees with me is wrong, but I'd still like to know what other people think in the comments!

4. He's Addicted To Video-Games

Unsplash | Rhett Noonan

"That he plays video games. For 10-15 hours a day. Even when he married. And has kids. And has a full-time job.

"With marriage counseling, he cut back to five hours a day. It’s now (year 22) back up to about 7 hours a day on weekdays. I never knew marriage was going to be this lonely." — JustDiscoveredSex

No one should spend that much time on video games if it is impacting negatively on the more important aspects of your life, such as your significant other or your kids. The relationships you have with your family are more important than a video-game — and that includes the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild!

I was actually the other way around until an embarrassingly old age, I always struggled with the 24-hour clock. And now everyone else knows this... what have I done?

Instagram | king_kylos86

"That he lives and breathes sports. I knew he liked sports when we were dating, but I didn't realize that's all he liked. I didn't know he would rather watch football games on Sundays than go to family dinners or anywhere else. I didn't realize he wouldn't want to watch anything but sports on tv. I didn't know that he would want to play or watch basketball/football/baseball/golf every waking moment." — Bleu_Rue

Yep, sports, all of the sports, I totally get you. I can't go a weekend without watching the sports, the one with the oval ball and such oh yeah that's the best sport.

14. Near Miss On The Honeymoon

Instagram | iamamysuter

"During the second night of our honeymoon, we decided to stay in and get some takeout. My beverage of choice at the time was Crystal Light Raspberry Ice which contains aspartame. While we were eating she wasn't thinking and she asked for a sip.

"About 5 minutes later she became extremely ill and started having issues breathing. After a few minutes, she read the ingredients on my beverage and yelled at me "I AM ALLERGIC TO ASPARTAME!!!". Me...being the loving new husband I am yelled back "SINCE WHEN!? YOU NEVER TOLD ME THAT!" She never bothered to tell me because she grew up in a household with no artificial sweeteners because she was allergic." — maxxian

I mean, if I was allergic to artificial sweeteners, a drink called "Crystal Light Raspberry Ice" would be sending up red flags! It sounds like the fakest drink on the planet!

While it must be difficult to find out how much your partner is struggling, it is great that you are able to help each other. Being able to support one another in every aspect is an important part of marriage.

16. The Nice Guy Act Was A Lie

Unsplash | Aliyah Jamous

"That the whole Mr. nice guy, Mr. sweet kind, generous, compassionate thing was a mask, an act, a disguise, and camouflage in order to lure me in, in order to possess and control me. Then after we got married the mask came off. I was too naive to recognize the red flags beforehand and fell into the trap. He faked being exactly the type of person that I wanted him to be, it was devastating to discover that the person I fell for never actually existed. Thank goodness I escaped. He was a true horror underneath." — Elin-Calliel

No matter whether you are married or not, you should never let yourself be controlled and manipulated in a relationship. It is good that this person managed to get away because it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that things will get better and sticking around when you know deep down that they won't.

It really cramped our lives for some time (years) and I've still not recovered after over ten years. My takeaway is that debt laws in the United States are really crummy and debt should not be passed to other people like this." -Ranger-Racoon

Him: (with a weird look on his face)"uhh is that okay for pregnant women to eat lemons?" Me: "Ummm? Yeah, I mean it's just a fruit." Him: "WHAT?! NO, THEY'RE NOT!"

He seemed genuinely shocked and for some reason a little bit angry lmao. Not the craziest thing, but he's pretty much an open book so there haven't been any wild surprises." -lindseydeen

29. "He Cannot Picture My Face"

Thomas AE | Unsplash

"He has aphantasia. It's a neurological condition where you can't recall memories as pictures or create images in your mind. He cannot and has never been able to picture what he is reading in a book or say, conjure an image of a forest or person in his mind. He can't imagine my face when I'm not there, though it's not like he forgets it. I'm the total opposite and always picture everything in my mind- I'm an artist and my job would be hard if I couldn't- so to me it's like in a way he's blind. It's just a different way of experiencing life I guess, but I was really sad for him when I found out." — Nyx_Shadowspawn

I had never heard about this condition until I read this post, and I cannot imagine how strange and difficult that must be for him. It must be tough not being able to picture the faces of those you love when you're away for long periods of time.
