10+ Times Movies Tricked Viewers With The Power Of Perception (And Mens Platforms)

Movies, in general, like to trick you, but this time we're going to talk about perception tricks.

Making actors taller, fooling your eyes to believe something is there when it isn't, etc, etc.

So, in case you were unaware, a lot goes into movies.

IMDb

They have to put a lot of time into lighting, cameras, effects, and more.

And sometimes, they have to add a little more to their characters.

What does that mean?

Marvel

It means men's platforms!

It also means just using perception angles with the camera. Either way works, but the men's platforms are easier (and funnier).

And just so you know, a lot of celebs already do this!

Really, they do!

Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. are both known for wearing some shoes with heels to put themselves on par with their cast members.

1. Humphrey Bogart was shorter than Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca...

Reddit | Isai76

It's always tough when your significant other is taller than you when you're a guy.

There's an expectation to be the big one in the relationship, so when you don't like up to it then it's tough.

So he wore platform shoes.

Reddit | Isai76

This was the case on the set of Casablanca.

Female lead Ingrid Bergman had some inches on Male star Humphrey Bogart, so he had to wear platform shoes.

2. 'Lord Of The Rings'.

IMDb

During shooting, Peter Jackson and co. used a technique called "Forced Perspective" in order to make the Hobbits much smaller than everyone else.

In reality, Elijah Wood is only 5 inches smaller than Ian McKellen.

3. 'X-Men'.

IMDb

So Jean Grey and Cyclops are a pretty decent couple as far as decent couples go... however, in real life James Madsen is actually two inches shorter than Famke Janssen.

Fix it in post production!

Fun fact:

Marvel

They tried making Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) shorter than James Marsden by standing in trenches, but it didn't work out!

4. 'The Dark Knight Rises'.

IMDb

Another case of a man wearing platform shoes!

Tom Hardy needed to be the same height as his Batman, Christian Bale, so he had to get that extra boost!

5.' Mission Impossible 3'.

IMDb

There was a whole bunch of switching height around for this movie.

Okay, so they all look about the same height, but in real life: Maggie Q is the shortest at 5' 6", Tom Cruise stands at just under 5' 8", Jonathan Rhys Meyers is 5' 10" and Ving Rhames is the tallest at 6'.

6. 'Harry Potter'.

IMDb

Although Hagrid is supposed to be a half-giant, believe it or not, he's not that big in real life.

He's actually only eight inches taller than a grown-up Daniel Radcliffe.

7. 'Iron Man' Series.

Marvel

Here's another instance of a man needing to be taller than his woman.

Turns out in real life, Tony Stark is only 5' 8" and Pepper Potts is 5' 9".

8. 'The Avengers'.

IMDb

Here's a role reversal for you: they actually made Scarlett Johannson taller in The Avengers and other movies.

9. 'The Year of Living Dangerously'.

IMDb

However, we return to form here with stars Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver.

Can you guess which one of them was made to be taller? If you guessed Sigourney, then you haven't been paying attention.

10. 'The Green Mile'.

13. 'The Fast And The Furious' Franchise.

IMDb

It's hard to live up to the Rock. Unless of course, you use camera tricks and forced perspective. That's exactly what the filmmakers did for Vin Diesel, who is the same height as the Rock in the movies.

I feel like I don't have to say this, but it isn't the case in real life.

In all honesty, it would have been pretty funny to see Vin Diesel shorter.

IMDb

Especially for the "This is Brazil!" shot alone.

That would have sent the theatre into a fit of laughs that would have never died down.

14. 'The Hunger Games'.

IMDb

This is something you've come to expect from this list, however, Josh Hutcherson (Peeta) is actually two inches shorter than Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss) in real life.

In the movie, they're the same height.

Which unfortunately, had to be done.

For some fans, Peeta paled in comparison to Gale.

So being a bit taller than the actor who played him definitely helped.
