13+ Discoveries That Are Incredible When You Know What You're Looking At

It's not always clear how meaningful something will be at first glance. Most people had no interest in buying Vincent Van Gogh's paintings when he was alive, but enough people eventually saw them for the masterworks they were that even one can easily fetch millions of dollars at auction nowadays.

Although most of the images we're about to see today probably won't feature that stark of a contrast, they're probably not going to mean as much without a little context sprinkled in.

Although this would be a pretty good design if it was someone's wooden sword, that's not what we're looking at.

Unfortunately, the reality is that this is an 11 foot long tree root that some poor soul had to get taken out of their drain pipe.

Trees and houses aren't always the best of friends.

These are definitely the pedals on a piano, but you may notice that one is a lot shinier than the others.

That's because the player used it so much more than the others over a 10-year period that their sock essentially buffed it until it looked as good as new.

It's hard not to notice that big hole in the wall, but it's also hard to pay attention to much else in this picture.

Reddit | once_pragmatic

When the uploader's furniture fell to make this hole, they found a coffee cup that had apparently been sitting there for over 10 years.

Remnants of a forgotten mid-reno coffee break, I guess?

There's actually a good chance that you've seen a more dazzling palm tree than this one.

Reddit | HumanofHyrule

However, that's only because whatever you have in mind wins by default. This isn't a palm tree at all, but rather a long exposure shot of fireworks that just happens to look like one.

This seems like a chaotic painting, but there's actually a very specific order to it.

This is definitely a crowded ship, but the reason for their voyage presents a mind-blowing idea of the scale of what they just survived.

Reddit | bent_spork

This ship was packed with American soldiers returning home from World War II. Remember that this absurd crowd filled just one ship's capacity for returning soldiers.

According to CNN, over 16 million Americans saw conflict in that war, and 405,399 of them would not return alive.

It's not a perfect representation, but this coffee stain should look a little bit familiar.

That's right, it feeds toilet paper out from the circle at the center rather than from the bottom. This is apparently to prevent trailing toilet paper from dragging on the gross bathroom floor.

Obviously, this watermelon is rotten and nobody should touch it, but don't get too surprised if someone tries to kick it.

Reddit | cleaninginprogress

After all, I know I'm not the only one who thinks the ravages of time have made this melon look a lot like a deflated soccer ball.

Sadly, this sunset wasn't in the sky during the Fourth of July.

Reddit | CallmeDevMaybe
