15 Things We Shouldn't Do On An Airplane

The world is finally beginning to normalize itself once again, which means that travel is slowly but surely beginning to resume.

It's been a long time since most of us have stepped foot on an airplane, and therefore might be a little rusty when it comes to airplane etiquette.

So before you jet-set across the globe, have a look at these 15 things you should never do on an airplane.

Do not rest your hands over the back of your seat.

Keep your hands and feet to yourself. Don't dangle your dirty digits over the back of your headrest or try and slide your foot up along the side of the plane.

Try to keep your shoes on at all times.

I hate to break it to you but your feet stink. No one wants to be stuck smelling your sweaty putrid socks for hours on end, so if you absolutely must remove your shoes then make sure to have slippers to wear.

Don't mistreat the flight attendants.

Flight attendants aren't there to be berated, disrespected, hit on, etc. These people work incredibly hard and are forced to put in very long hours, so the least you can do is treat them with decency

Keep your music at a reasonable volume.

Remember that you aren't in your bedroom or in your office. Your music therefore should not be audible to the person sitting next to you. I suggest bringing a pair of noise-canceling headphones along for the trip for this very reason.

Don't get wasted.

Remember that alcohol may have a more profound effect on you in higher altitudes. And if you force the pilot to make an emergency stop in order to remove your drunk ass from the plane — rest assured you'll be slapped with a heavy fine.

Stink food has no place on an airplane.

I once sat next to someone on a plane who brought three hardboiled eggs to snack on during the trip. The smell was almost unbearable and I was nearly sick to my stomach.

The moral of the story: leave your stinky food at home.

Stay away from the coffee.

When's the last time you gave your coffee machine a good thorough cleaning? My point exactly.

The coffee filters rarely get changed on a plane, and the water they use to make it is often from the plane's water reserve tanks.

Be mindful of the armrest.

It's common courtesy that whoever happens to be stuck in the middle seat should be allowed full use of both armrests on either side. Don't try and get greedy if you've already been lucky enough to secure a window/aisle seat.

Absolutely do not drink the water from the bathroom sink.

When the sign says "DO NOT DRINK THE WATER," brother — you better not drink the water. It's not filtered, it isn't clean, and you will almost assuredly get sick.

Bring a water bottle with you or just wait patiently for the drink cart.

Try not to get upset when the person in front of you reclines their seat.

Nobody likes it when the person in front of them reclines their seat but guess what — they have every right to do it. Just as you do, so make sure to take advantage but only after the plane has taken off.

There's no need to clap when the plane lands.

How would you feel if someone showed up at your work and started mindlessly clapping at you simply for doing your job?

Trust me, you just end up looking like an idiot. If you want to thank the pilots for a safe flight, do so as you exit the plane.

Do not recline your seat during meal times.

Make sure that the person behind you is finished eating before you recline your seat backward. If you send their glass of beer or microwaved chicken masala into their lap, bet that they won't be happy about it.

Be empathetic toward parents with crying children.

Do you know who hates a crying baby on an airplane more than you do? That baby's mother or father. Try to be understanding toward new parents, ask what you can do to help them instead of shooting daggers from across the plane.

Do not kick the back of the chair in front of you.

Don't kick and also do not put your knees up against the back of the chair. This is quite literally the worst most annoying thing you can do to someone.

Instead, if you're feeling jittery, get up and go for a short walk up and down the aisle.

Keep your kids under control

Parents, please control your offspring. Don't allow them to run rampant all over the plane disturbing those around them. Bring a tablet, a video game, anything that will keep them from terrorizing the other passengers.
