The Met Gala has long been considered the night when all the A-list fashionistas come out to play. It's an opportunity for celebrities to flex their style muscle in truly eccentric and unique ways.

This year, the Met Gala didn't disappoint, showcasing some of the most eclectic and avant-garde pieces of recent memory.

Surprisingly (or perhaps not surprisingly at all), some of the most unforgettable looks didn't come courtesy of Gen Z, but rather from a group of 50-something-year-old women who proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that they're still trendsetters in their own right.

This year, Hillary decided to leave her pantsuit at home and opted instead for a classic rosewood-colored burgundy ball gown. Her decision to pair it with an orange clutch delivered the perfect pop of color to really make the dress stand out.

Kris Jenner

It isn't hard to understand why Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner have achieved demi-god status in the world of fashion and beauty cosmetics — they got it from their mama. You could even make the argument that Kris outdid them both!

Julianne Moore

Julianne's dress is an ode to old Hollywood and the starlets of yesteryear. Her ivory gown and matching gloves were powerful, yet subdued — much like the Oscar-winning actress herself. Also, those earrings are positively to die for.

Glenn Close

Unlike Sebastian Stan, who also saw fit to drape himself in pink from head to toe, Glenn's execution was absolutely flawless. Standing with her back to the rose wall, Glenn creates the illusion of a lone flower being plucked from a garden of weeds.

Sigourney Weaver

Sigourney Weaver is one of few women able to pull off badassery equally as well as she does elegance — if you don't believe me, then you clearly haven't seen Alien. Here, she looked as breathtaking as the night sky.

Christine Baranski

Christine appeared to be paying homage to Met Gala founder/hostess Anna Wintour, with her signature Chanel sunglasses. Her jaw-dropping tuxedo/dress is as androgynous as it is alluring and perfectly suits the Emmy-winning actress's style and fashion motif.

Deborra-Lee Furness

Deborra-Lee Furness looked amazing. I know, what else is new? Even after being married to People's former "Sexiest Man Alive" for an excess of 25 years, Deb proves time and time again that when it comes to their relationship dynamic — she is the settler and Hugh is the reacher.

Priscilla Presley

Have mercy because Priscilla Presley has us all shook up! Her tight-fit black dress, complete with gold arm cuffs and black tassels, had the paparazzi buzzing and flashing wherever she went. It's classic, understated, and everything you could've hoped for.

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker has never been afraid to make a statement when it comes to fashion. Her fit looks as if she just walked off the set of Bridgerton and/or that she perhaps fell from the pages of a Charlotte Brontë novel.

Renée Elise Goldsberry

When Renée isn't astounding theater audiences with her Tony Award-winning performances, she's taking names and breaking hearts on the red carpet. Suffice it to say that the late great Audrey Hepburn would've more than approved of this iconic look.

Erykah Badu

There are those who believe that Erykah Badu is the second coming of the legendary jazz singer, Billie Holiday. The only difference between these two icons is that Billie Holiday never looked so good draped in embroidery and beads.

Michelle Yeoh

Go on, brush your shoulders off, Michelle. You look like a walking talking bowl of mint chocolate chip ice cream, and we're all hungry for another scoop. I'd give anything just to touch the fringe of her train as she ever so elegantly walked by.

Naomi Campbell

There's no denying that Naomi's Burberry gown was a showstopper. But what really had people looking twice was the proverbial diamond mine she had wrapped around her neck. In case you were curious, the necklace was adorned with 37 yellow diamonds and was worth an estimated $6.6 million.

Anna Wintour

Without Anna Wintour, there wouldn't be a Met Gala — thus any list that didn't include her would be incomplete at best. This year, she ditched her signature sunglasses for a colorfully beaded masterpiece, complete with a feather poncho.

Gwen Stefani

Don't speak, I know just what you're thinking, and you're right — Gwen Stefani looked like a neon angel. But what's arguably even more impressive than her stunning Vera Wang gown, was the fact that Gwen did all of her own makeup, using all her own branded cosmetics!
