The summer of 1987 was a summer like no other. It's when the world was first introduced to a young woman by the name of Frances 'Baby' Houseman and her boyishly handsome dance instructor, Johnny Castle.

Dirty Dancing would serve as a launch point for the careers of actors Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, and has since become one of the defining films of the decade.

As hard as it is to imagine, it's been nearly 35 years since audiences everywhere learned that "Nobody puts 'Baby' in a corner." And in a recent interview with People, Jennifer is opening up about what it was like for her and Patrick to be "Forced to be together."

The '80s was a decade defined by music and dance.

It's no small wonder that it was at this time when the world was first introduced to some of the most iconic romantic dramatic dance films of all time.

Such classic titles included the likes of 'Footloose', 'Flashdance', and of course 'Dirty Dancing'.

Dirty Dancing tells the story of Frances 'Baby' Houseman and Johnny Castle. After meeting at a secret "Dirty Dancing" event, a romance begins to blossom while they learn to love and trust one another on the dance floor.

The film was one of the biggest surprise hits of the summer, raking in $216 million on a $6 million budget.

What was even more surprising for fans was that unlike their characters 'Baby' and Johnny — actress Jennifer Grey and budding movie star Patrick Swayze didn't like each other.

"The same way Baby and Johnny were not supposed to be together… a natural match, right? And we weren't a natural match," Grey told 'People'.

"And the fact that we needed to be a natural match created a tension," Jennifer explained.

The former 'Dirty Dancing' star went on to say that hers and Patrick's disdain for one another complicated things for the studio.

Normally, when two people aren't a good fit for one another, they simply move on. But in the case of Patrick and Jennifer, they were forced to be together.

"And our being forced to be together created a kind of a synergy, or like a friction," Grey went on to say.

At the time, Patrick Swayze was considered to be a bonified sex symbol. Every woman on the planet wanted to be near him and Jennifer couldn't get far enough away.

"And the weird thing was, it's like, 'What's wrong with me?'" Jennifer asked her interviewer rhetorically.

Despite what the public's perception of the Dirty Dancing co-stars undeniably was, both Jennifer and Patrick were in committed relationships at the time.

"And he was married and very in love with his wife. Whatever he was doing, I was not… I was very busy with Matthew."

Jennifer is of course making reference to her Ferris Bueller's Day Off co-star, Matthew Broderick, whom she dated and was also briefly engaged to before parting ways in 1988.

During the interview, Jennifer was asked if there was anything that she and Patrick had left unsaid.

"I feel like if I could say anything to him now I would say, 'I'm so sorry that I couldn't just appreciate and luxuriate in who you were, instead of me wishing you were more like what I wanted you to be.'"

Jennifer also revealed that she and Lionsgate are in talks for a 'Dirty Dancing' sequel.

The author of the upcoming book "Out of the Corner: A Memoir" said that they've been working on a script for years now and that she hopes to introduce/reintroduce the film to a whole new generation of moviegoers.

"'Dirty Dancing' was a fairy tale," Jennifer said bluntly.

"A successful movie and formula, using dance as a metaphor for embodying your energy and getting out of your head, and your limiting belief systems." Simply put — it was the time of her life.
