The holidays can be especially challenging if you don't have a solid relationship with your whole family. It always seems like there's someone on your partner's side who doesn't seem to like you that much. But being part of a family oftentimes means compromising to make others happy.

Then there are stories like the one a Reddit user told (posting on a throwaway account). The user discusses how, when there were no chairs left for her at her in-law's Thanksgiving dinner, she decided to sit on her husband's lap. This upset MIL and her husband's ex, who was also there. Now, she's asking the Am I The Asshole community if she really did cross the line.

Things Seem Somewhat Complicated In OP's New Family.

The user talks about how she recently married her husband, but his in-laws have a good relationship with his ex. In fact, from OP's descriptions, it seems that the MIL might like the ex more than her.

During the recent Thanksgiving holiday held at MIL's house, OP arrived separately from her husband. She came in time for dinner but found out that an extra relative showed up unannounced and there were no seats left for OP. The ex was seated next to the husband. OP decided to sit on her husband's lap for the duration of dinner and acted like there were no problems.

At one point, both MIL and the ex excused themselves from the table, and the ex ended up leaving early. Later, MIL called both OP and her husband to berate OP for making them uncomfortable and said OP should've just brought a chair from the other room. The Reddit user wondered if she went about the situation in the wrong way.

Many were pretty baffled at the fact that MIL didn't offer to get OP a seat to begin with. It's also pretty obvious that MIL favors the ex over her own daughter-in-law.

Others Wondered Why The Husband Seemingly Did Nothing The Whole Time.

A bunch of users wondered why OP's husband didn't notice there were no chairs left for his wife until after she showed up. It also led to people joking about how he pretty much acted like a chair in any case.

For what it's worth, it seems that, while OP may have been acting a little petty, she had reason to do so. The unanimous opinion was that OP was not in the wrong by any means.
